International Colloquium on ELT and Sustainability 2023 Unveils Expert Speakers for Two-Day Event (Day 1)

Department of Language and Literature Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), in collaboration with Department of English Education Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya, proudly presents the much-anticipated International Colloquium on English Language Teaching (ELT) and Sustainability 2023. The event, themed "Transcending Eco-ELT, Ecolinguistics, and Ecocriticism from Research to Practice for Environmental Sustainability," promises to be a crucial platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to explore the intersection of language education and environmental consciousness.

The colloquium aims to facilitate an interdisciplinary dialogue on the role of English language teaching in promoting environmental sustainability. It will bring together experts from various fields, including education, linguistics, and environmental studies, to discuss and share insights on integrating eco-ELT principles, ecolinguistics, and ecocriticism into language education practices.

In this activity, some lecturers of UMSurabaya had the opportunity to be the speakers at the event, including; Dr. Jepri ali Saiful, Ari Setyorini, SS., MA., Sofi Yunianti, SS., M.Pd., and Sri Lestari, S.Pd., M.Hum. Not only that, there were several speakers from several prestigious universities in the world, such as Universiti Malaya, University of the Philippines Cebu, University of Mosul, Southern Cross University Australia, James Cook University, Mekai University, and several other institutions. This event was held online via Zoom, on 27 and 28 November 2023, and was attended by 300 participants.

Participants will delve into innovative pedagogical approaches that incorporate environmental themes into English language teaching. Discussions will cover the development of materials, lesson plans, and activities that raise environmental awareness among language learners. In addition to the keynote addresses, the colloquium will feature engaging panel discussions with experts from various universities, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives.

Dr. Mundakir, S.Kep.,N.S.,M.Kep, Vice Rector of UMSurabaya stated on his speech that this event can foster collaboration among scholars, educators, and researchers in the field of language education and environmental sustainability and also provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and best practices in incorporating eco-ELT principles into language teaching.

The colloquium aims to promote a deeper understanding of the role of language in shaping environmental attitudes and behaviors, also encourage the development of practical tools and resources for educators to integrate sustainability into their teaching.

As the world grapples with environmental challenges, this colloquium provides a timely platform for educators to explore how language teaching can contribute to a more sustainable future. The International Colloquium on ELT and Sustainability 2023 promises to be a catalyst for positive change in language education and environmental awareness.
